Typically, SAT preparation and school are kept separate—students may take an SAT class on the weekend, meet with a tutor after the school day is over, or study from an SAT prep book a little each day—but Vocab Videos is a fun and effective SAT vocabulary program that can effortlessly be worked into your classroom. Below we suggest just a few of the ways the Vocab Videos system can be incorporated into the school day include:

  • Word of the Day Exercise: Accompany an SAT vocabulary “Word of the Day” definition with a hilarious vocab video that illustrates the word’s meaning. The videos’ humor will give students something to look forward to each day, and students will be learning an SAT vocabulary word that they will need to know for standardized tests like the SAT and ACT. Encourage students to use the vocabulary word whenever possible throughout the day!
  • Episode per Week: If you’re working toward an approaching SAT test date and one word a day isn’t enough, create a plan to watch one Vocab Videos episode per week. For example, you can watch the video once through and then go over individual SAT vocabulary words throughout the week. You also have the option of giving students an accompanying Vocab Videos quiz at the end of the week to ensure that they are retaining the material. With each Vocab Videos episode only about 10 minutes long, Vocab Videos will hardly interfere with your daily teaching routine.
  • Homework Assignment: You can also assign episodes or a certain number of SAT vocabulary words as homework. With any Vocab Videos classroom package, students are set up with individual accounts that they can access from home by simply logging into the online vocabulary system. Give students quizzes to make sure that they’re keeping pace and learning the essential vocabulary. No two students are exactly alike, so viewing Vocab Videos from home (in addition to or in place of) watching them in the classroom can be advantageous: it gives students the opportunity to spend more time reviewing the SAT vocabulary words that they’re struggling with.

No matter how you elect to incorporate Vocab Videos into your classroom, encourage students to get involved in the learning process! They should use these SAT and ACT vocabulary words as often as possible in classroom conversation and writing assignments. Also be sure to take advantage of our extensive suite of study materials, including worksheets which allow students to write their own sentences using the SAT vocabulary as well as mnemonic devices to help remember definitions.

Remember: the goal is for students to get a real understanding of the SAT and ACT vocabulary. Vocab Videos’ visual and auditory illustrations of word meanings paired with review materials that reinforce vocabulary knowledge allow students to do just that. And when students truly comprehend the definitions, they will be able to recognize and understand the vocabulary words even when they appear within an unfamiliar context as they will on the SAT or ACT test. An increased vocabulary will serve students far beyond standardized test preparation. In addition to raising SAT and ACT test scores, learning these frequently-tested SAT and ACT vocabulary words will help students become better readers, writers, and overall English students!
